When you think about a family photography session, having everyone together is probably one of the first things that comes to mind. And for good reason. A photograph of the whole family becomes a record of everyone being there, together, at that particular moment in time. But a family isn’t only one group. There are smaller relationships happening all the time: a parent and child, siblings laughing together, a grandparent and grandchild, or even one child completely absorbed in their own little world. A family session can make room for those photographs, too.
The Whole Family Still Matters
There’s something special about having everyone in the frame. Years from now, a photograph showing the whole family can become one of those images that gets looked at again and again. It records not only the people who were there, but how the family looked and felt at that point in its life. That’s an important part of family photography.
Then Let the Frame Get Smaller
Once you have those photographs, there’s no reason to stop there. A child sitting with Dad. Two siblings sharing a joke. Mom fixing someone’s hair. Grandparents with their grandchildren. These smaller combinations can reveal relationships that might disappear when everyone is gathered together. They aren’t replacements for the big family portrait. They’re another part of the story.
The Little Combinations Matter, Too
One of the lovely things about photographing a family is seeing how everyone connects differently. Some relationships are loud and playful. Others are quieter. Some happen through a conversation, a shared look, or simply being comfortable next to each other. Photographs don’t always need to explain those connections. Sometimes putting two or three people in the frame is enough to make them visible.
A Family Session Can Hold Both
The best family sessions don’t have to choose between the big picture and the smaller moments. You can have the photograph where everyone is together, along with the photographs that show the individual relationships within that family. Because when you look back, you may want both: the picture of everyone, and the little pictures that remind you how everyone belonged to one another.
