These are a few candids from a recent photo shoot in Prospect Park of two young sisters:  which one do you think is shier, which one a little more fearless?

Taking a decent photograph of someone is generally a matter of composition and light, but what makes a shot “pop” — and what makes it unique — is when I successfully capture my subject’s personality.  Three big benefits to making that my focus during family portrait sessions:  (1) the shoots are more fun and relaxed — no one is trying to be someone or something they’re not;  (2) my clients come back to me because I “get” them and their kids (returning clients are a huge source of business for me); and (3) my portfolio subsequently is more varied, less cookie-cutter.
